I think any localized adaptation of Shakespearean works, would serve as a wonderful tool for our youth today, to develop awareness, and understanding of the depth and complexity of the general human condition. As it becomes more relatable to the plights of our youth, it becomes of interest again. A much needed new source of interest that is both relatable, and constructive. Away from the mindless, superficial, brainrotting scrolling of tiktoks and insta reels.

Convincing? It was the worst staging I saw in my life, and believe me I saw a lot of bad stagings. Paris Opera should be ashamed of itself for showing this amateurishly staged and sung crap.

Comment on Mike Bartlett’s “Scandaltown” at Lyric Hammersmith by Mark https://thetheatretimes.com/mike-bartletts-scandaltown-at-lyric-hammersmith/#comment-106837 Thu, 21 Apr 2022 21:23:25 +0000 https://thetheatretimes.com/?p=125310#comment-106837 Was I watching the same play? I attended last night’s performance and have to congratulate the cast, Director, Playwright and all involved in Scandaltown. The ongoing clash between the 17th century language and the contemporary was (it seemed to me) a powerful way to further emphasise virtue over vice and a modern nod to the writers of the time who did exactly the same.
In the further spirit of restoration comedy nobody died, there was the potential for redemption for all and the balance was maintained between preaching and comedy.
Feel like a fun, thoughtful, bawdy and delicately but barbed poke at the modern day? Head for Scandaltown!
